PCI Compliance https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/ applies to any merchant that accepts credit cards - there are no exceptions, and it is not optional. The risks of failing to comply are significant: one of our clients was withheld over $100,000 of credit card receipts until fully compliant.

A common misconception is that simply installing a firewall leads equals compliance. This is not the case at all, and many consumer firewalls do not provide the minimum level of security required.
